Does Hearthwise connect to my bank?

No. You log spending yourself with the quick-add bar — amount, category, done. Nothing connects to your accounts and nothing can move money. Many families find logging by hand is exactly what makes them notice where money goes.

How do my kids use it?

Add each kid in the Family tab. Then tap Switch at the top of any screen and choose their name to hand over the phone or iPad. They'll see their own jars, chores, goals, and Money School — never your budget. The parent PIN you create during setup keeps it that way: the parents' side asks for it and locks again after a minute away.

I forgot the parent PIN.

On the PIN screen, tap Forgot PIN? and confirm it's you with Face ID or Touch ID, then set a new PIN right there. Phones without Face ID or Touch ID use the phone's passcode instead. If your phone has Face ID or Touch ID but it's turned off for Hearthwise, turn it on in Settings first. If your phone has no passcode, turn one on in Settings first. Without one of these, the PIN can't be reset.

Good to know: after five wrong PIN tries, the PIN screen pauses, and each extra wrong try makes the pause longer. Resetting the PIN always ends with you choosing a new one, so the parents' side is never left without a PIN. You can change the PIN anytime in Family → Settings, but you can't turn it off. The parent PIN is a family lock for everyday hand-offs; to keep the whole device private, use your phone's passcode and Screen Time.

How do the three jars work?

Money a kid earns or receives — chores, allowance, gifts — splits into Spend, Save, and Share using percentages they choose on the My Jar tab. Spending comes out of Spend, goals are funded from Save, and giving comes from Share. Only the Save jar gets Kindling.

What is Kindling, and who pays it?

Kindling is your family's savings bonus: a little extra you add to each kid's Save jar. You pay it. In Family, you set how big the bonus is and a limit on how much of each Save jar earns it. It's added in small amounts at each weekly meeting, so kids watch it grow. Hearthwise only keeps track of it; no money moves through the app. (Kindling used to be called the Family Bank.)

Can I change how the weekly meeting works?

Yes. On the Meeting tab, tap Customize to choose the day and time, meet every week or every other week, turn steps on or off, reorder them, add your own agenda items, and pick the kind of conversation questions you want.

How do I back up my data or move to a new phone?

Go to Family → Backup file and tap Export backup. Hearthwise shows a code for that file: write it down or save it in a password manager (not in your photos, and not next to the file), then save the backup file to iCloud Drive or Files, or email it to yourself. The file is encrypted and can only be opened with that code. On the new device, install Hearthwise, tap “Moving from another phone? Restore a backup file” on the first screen, choose the file, and enter the code. (If Hearthwise is already set up on that device, use Family → Backup file → Restore instead; it replaces what's there.) Your parent PIN and kids' codes aren't included, so the new device asks for a new parent PIN, and you can set kids' codes again in Family. We recommend exporting a backup once a month.

Can another parent use Hearthwise on their phone too?

Not yet. In the beta, Hearthwise lives on one device. Sharing between parents' phones is something we're working on, and we'll update this page when it's ready.

How do I see a walkthrough again?

Tap the ? button at the top of any screen to replay that area's guide. To replay everything, go to Family → Guides → Replay all guides.

Is my information private?

Yes. Everything you enter is stored on your device. The app has no sign-up, no analytics, and no ads, and we never sell or share your data. Hearthwise doesn't send your family's data to us. During the beta, crash reports reach us automatically through Apple's TestFlight; feedback, screenshots, and any extra crash details reach us only if you choose to send them, and backup files you export are encrypted with a code only you have. Read the full privacy policy.

Joining the beta

Getting access. The Hearthwise beta runs on TestFlight, Apple's free app for trying apps before they reach the App Store. We'll email you an invitation. Please use a parent's Apple ID and email address, never a child's. The beta is free, and you'll need an iPhone or iPad on iOS or iPadOS 16.4 or later.

Installing. Install TestFlight from the App Store on the iPhone or iPad you'll use. Open our invitation email on that device, tap View in TestFlight, then tap Install. Hearthwise shows up on your Home Screen with a small orange dot, which marks it as a beta. Each build lasts up to 90 days, and TestFlight tells you when a new one is ready. If your invite isn't working, email hello@hearthwiseapp.com and we'll send a fresh one.

Reporting a problem. The easiest way is to take a screenshot while using Hearthwise, tap the preview, then tap Share Beta Feedback. Add a note and send it. You can also open TestFlight, choose Hearthwise, and tap Send Beta Feedback, or email hello@hearthwiseapp.com. If the app crashes, TestFlight sends us a crash report automatically. It describes the technical problem, not your family's information. TestFlight may also ask if you want to add details about the crash; that's up to you. Screenshots show whatever is on your screen, so please leave kids' full names and other sensitive details out of screenshots and notes. Along with crash reports and any feedback or screenshots you choose to send, Apple shares some tester details with us, such as your device model and iOS version, and your name and email if you were invited by email.

Backing up your data. The budgets and jars you create stay on your device, and devices don't sync in this beta. That means deleting the app erases your family's data on that device. To back up, go to Family → Backup file → Export backup. Write down the code Hearthwise shows for that file, then save the file to iCloud Drive or Files, or email it to yourself. Keep the code somewhere safe and separate from the file. The file is encrypted with that code, and Hearthwise doesn't keep a copy, so if the code is lost, we can't recover the backup for you. We recommend backing up before you delete the app and every so often during the beta. Export a backup before you switch to the App Store version.

Contact us

For help, feedback, or ideas, email hello@hearthwiseapp.com. Tell us which device you're using and what you were trying to do, and we'll get back to you.

Hearthwise is designed to keep what you enter on your device. The only things that can leave it are crash reports that TestFlight sends automatically during the beta, feedback or screenshots you choose to send through TestFlight, crash reports you allow Apple to share after launch, and any backup file you export yourself. The details are in our Privacy Policy.
